FNSI results and Giveaway at Green Fairy

FNSI was a success! I started with a small snag. My sewing machine wouldn't work right! The top thread was showing through to the bottom. I checked the tension. I had it all the way down to 1 and then realized it was not my sewing machine. It was my thread! I was using some donated thread that was cotton wrapped polyester and my machine hated it! It wouldn't even wind right on the bobbin. Has this ever happened to you?

So I switched threads and moved on. At first I used the same quilting technique for my Rehab Quilt, which is pinning paper to the fabric and sewing on the lines. After doing one, and all the chaos over the thread, I was over it and just wanted to quilt! So I just tried FMQ with no marking! I think it turned out rather well! I quilted a leaf vine in the borders, I free-handed some stars in the cornerstones and then free-handed some posey patterns in the charm squares.

Not bad, huh? I'm pretty impressed. Especially since I can't draw at all. I am improving though!

I wish I had time to work on it today, but it's my nephew's first birthday, then hanging out with our best friend tonight, then Father's Day BBQ with the fam tomorrow! I'm trying to type this super fast!

Look who joined me for FNSI

Normally, these guys are not allowed to lay on my fabric, but they looked so happy and sweet, I let them hang out with me!

  1. Yes the bobbin problem has happened to me but I found a very cheap solution. You may be too young to remember the reenforcemet holes that we use to apply to our school writing paper but that's the type of thing that will work on fussy bobbins. I forget what the little thingys are called now but they are not sticky and fit in the bobbin case, under your.. bobbin winder and I'm sure have many other uses....
Boy was that windy.... hope it helps.

  2. I have had that problem with thread, and I didn't realize it was the thread either. I cursed my machine, and i took in into the shop. Of course, it only happened when I had a large block of time to quilt, and the shop was closed. Glad you found the solution! And I do have a couple of bobbins that look like that! Keep on stitching.

  3. I learned a long time ago that poor quality thread is not worth the few pennies difference in price :(

You do some beautiful machine freestyle quilting. I love the leaves and vines! Looks like you had a great FNSI!

  4. I had that happen to me just this past week. I found a huge cone of thread I had marked bobbin only, so I wound 10 bobbins, sew for about 30 minutes, then the spool I was using went empty, grabbed another white one to get rid of it, it was a coats and clark, instead of the usual Guetermann. Started sewing 5 inch blocks together, got about 30 of them chain pieced, and I realized something was amiss. Cut the thread pulled them from behind the machine, and everyone of them was only about 3 inches across, the thread had gathered them all! What!?!?!?!?! I am thinking, you have got to be kidding me, I just wound 10 bobbins with thread I can't use, then I remembered, I had been sewing without a problem till the spool ran out, so I switched out the spool to a new Guetermann one, cut all thirty pieces apart, pulled the threads out to make them all 5 inch blocks again, then had to go back and restitch both ends of all thirty blocks. Then I started with all the other blocks I had, hadn't had a problem again. That other spool is headed to the trash, it isn't worth the headache, not with as much sewing time as I have been putting in lately. Drop by my blog and see what I have been up too..... 16muddyfeet.blogspot.com
